Easy and cheap campfire pit

Happy birthday, America! We’re running around like crazy people, trying to get ready for family festivities and I’m asking myself for the thousandth time, “Why didn’t I start getting ready days ago??!”

Oh, right. Because our sweet little survivor chick, Rocky, has been having time consuming issues. Did you know chicks can get constipated? I can now add ‘expert administrator of chick enemas’ to my resume. Just what I always wanted. Poor baby…

I know most of my US readers are attending parades, getting ready for picnics, and gearing up for fireworks, but I wanted to pop in here and break the silence… and give y’all something shorter to read!

A few weeks ago, we finally ‘built’ a firepit in our backyard. I say ‘built’ with air quotes, because it was hardly a tough project. We’d wanted one for years and years, but kept thinking it was going to be harder and more expensive than we thought. Now, granted, ours won’t be featured in Good Housekeeping any time soon, but it works, and we love it!

Chicken-dogs over the fire

We dug out a circle of grass, put down a bit of weed paper we already had on hand (cutting out a circle in the middle later), and placed our paver stones. They were around $45 total from Home Depot. We used liquid nails type stuff to glue them. We poured pea gravel all around the outside, and called it done! There are… unsightly gaps, but we don’t care.

Pie iron goodies

That night we broke her in with our double pie irons and made mini pies, yummy sandwiches (mine on gluten free bread), and pseudo s’mores. Fun!

The kids slept out on the trampoline and I felt tension leave my body head to toe. Summer is my favorite.

Campfire in our new fire pit!

Do you own or have you ever used pie irons? Any favorite recipes? Do share!

A few weeks ago the kids slept in the tent in the back yard with their cousins, when they woke we lined the pie irons with bread, smooshed them a bit in the center then cracked eggs into them. It worked pretty well, but we had to make sure we didn’t burn the outside of the bread before the eggs cooked. The kids loved cooking all their food over the fire but, I think their favorite was the apples they skewered and cooked like marshmallows.

My brother-in-law has the BEST fire pit. It’s the drum from his old washing machine. The drainage holes around the outside provide plenty of air so the fire burns nicely, and it looks so pretty at night.

  3. Andrea says:

We used to make “pizza” at Girls Camp with them. It’s just bread with sauce, cheese and pepperoni as the filling. They are just like Calzones.

Pie Irons! Brilliant! Oh they have waffle irons too! On my camping want list now.

Nice fire pit! I’ve been redrawing my backyard landscaping in hopes of putting one in.

  5. That sounds like the perfect Summer day. Sleeping on the trampoline–awesome!

Oh, I want a fire pit SO BADLY. The first house we lived in after we got married had one and we certainly did not use it enough. This house had one when we looked at it, but when I asked the landlords about it, they said they had to take it away because of fire regulations and it was gone and covered with grass by the time we moved in.

One day I will own my own house and it will have a fire pit AND THEN I will give you pie recipes. :)

(We slept on my friends’ trampoline as kids. So much fun. Summer is my favourite, too.)

Hey…you should definitely bring those pie irons with you on our camping trip! I’m bringing mine…pudgy pies are the best!!!

Nutella with raspberry jam is our latest, favorite pie iron filling discovery. I also love Reuben sandwiches made in them.
